Introduction / History

The Abun are an indigenous people group living in Papua, Indonesia, along the northern coastal areas near the Bird's Head Peninsula. They belong to the New Guinea people cluster within the Pacific Islanders affinity bloc. Their language, Abun, is part of the West Papuan family and is distinct from the Austronesian languages spoken elsewhere in Indonesia. Historically, the Abun have lived in small coastal and forest villages, relying on fishing and farming while maintaining strong clan-based traditions. Their cultural identity has been preserved through oral histories, ancestral rituals, and close ties to their land.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Abun live in villages scattered along the coast and forested interior. Daily life revolves around subsistence farming, fishing, and hunting. Families cultivate sago, taro, bananas, and sweet potatoes, while fish and shellfish provide essential protein. Men often fish or hunt, while women manage gardens, prepare food, and care for children. Extended family networks are central, with clans providing social cohesion and mutual support.

Celebrations include weddings, harvest festivals, and Christian holidays, often marked by communal meals, music, and dance. Traditional storytelling and ritual practices remain important, while hospitality is a valued trait, with guests welcomed warmly.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Abun identify primarily with Christianity, with Protestant traditions being the most common. Evangelical presence is strong. Some Abun blend Christian teaching with traditional animistic practices, however, limiting what Christ can do in their lives.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities remains limited, with many communities marginalized within Indonesia's development. Infrastructure such as clean water, transportation, and reliable markets would greatly improve daily life. Holistic mission efforts that combine gospel proclamation with practical support are essential for their flourishing.

Prayer Items

Pray that Abun families and churches will be transformed by the Holy Spirit's fire.
Pray asking the Lord to raise up local believers who can lead their communities with wisdom and courage.

Pray for their physical needs, including access to healthcare, education, and clean water, that their communities may thrive.
